Renovated straight staircase in a light hallway with oak overlay treads, white strings and a slim black handrail

Staircase renovation

A new staircase, without demolition

Overlay treads on the staircase you already have, in a wood or stone look. Your staircase stays put and you can use it again.

The staircase stays put

No demolition, no hole in the upstairs floor and no weeks without a staircase.

Little dust in the house

The staircase sits in the middle of the house. We work clean and cover the walking route.

Matches your floor

We find a tone that ties in with the floor you have downstairs or upstairs.

How it works

Over the staircase, not out with it

With a staircase renovation your existing stairs simply stay where they are. A made-to-measure layer goes over the top: a tread on every step and a riser against every upstand, fixed down and neatly finished at the side. What you end up with is a new staircase on an old structure.

That is a different story from replacing a staircase. There the whole thing comes out, a hole appears in the floor and you are left for days with no way upstairs. For a staircase that is still solid, overlaying is in almost every case the wiser choice.

  • Every step gets measured, because an old staircase is rarely the same width all the way up.
  • Wood or stone look, and a nosing that ties in with the rest of the finish.
  • An anti-slip edge can be added, handy with small children or if it is steep.
  • The handrail and the strings can be painted in the same run.

How it goes

In steps, with the staircase in use

We work from the top down or the other way around, so you can still get past in between.

01 — Measuring

Every step on its own

We measure each step separately. In an older house the sizes drift apart, sometimes by a centimetre or more, and with a tight finish you see that straight away. The treads are then made to those measurements.

02 — Fitting

Treads and risers on

The old carpet or vinyl comes off, the staircase is cleaned up and made flat, and then the treads and risers go on. If there is a turn or a quarter landing in it, those treads are cut to size. We finish the sides with a profile or a strip.

03 — Finishing

Handrail, strings and the hallway too

With the staircase in hand anyway, the handrail and the string are easy to take along. Sanding and into the gloss, or a slim new handrail instead. We will paint the hallway around it as well if you want, in the same run.

More about painting

Often comes with it

The staircase and the rest of the hallway

A new staircase suddenly makes the rest of the hallway look old. That is why people often take it along at the same time.

Can we still use the stairs while you are working?

Yes. We finish the treads in order and there is never a gap in the staircase. There is a period where the adhesive has to grab, and then we ask you to stay upstairs or downstairs for a few hours. We agree that with you up front.

Is overlaying as strong as a new staircase?

Overlaying only works if the staircase underneath is still sound. So we check first that the structure is solid and that the treads do not flex or sit loose. If that is not in order we say so, and overlaying makes no sense.

Can it be done on a staircase with a turn?

Yes. A quarter turn or a full turn is possible, only those treads have to be cut to size one by one. That is more work than a straight staircase and we say so in the price up front.

Will the staircase be slippery?

A bare smooth tread is not pleasant in socks. So an anti-slip strip or a profile can go on the nosing. With small children or a steep staircase we recommend it. We show you what the options are.

What does a staircase renovation cost?

That depends on the number of steps, on whether there is a turn in it and on the material you choose. That is why there is no amount on this page. We come and measure the staircase and you get a price on paper afterwards.
